Copyrights protect the unique expression of some underlying idea. There are a wide variety of productions which might require copyright protections:

Trademarks provide protection to the goodwill, and good name that you develop with your company, products, or services. Trademarks are also about protecting consumers from bad business practices. If you sell the highest quality, safest paint in the world, and someone else uses the same packaging and name as you while also using an inferior product, then both consumers and you are harmed by that action. Consumers are harmed because they expected the paint to be of a certain quality when they purchased it, but they were misled by the packaging. Your business is harmed because those consumers now associate that bad experience with your brand.
